a few months back i read an article on some english newspapers website about an exhibition that was being put up with the photographic work of artist dieter roth. roth walked the streets of reykjavik, capturing his view of the houses in the city. the project ended up being some 31.000+ slides of houses in rvk and some say every house in the city was captured by roth. reading the article i got a little inspired and decided to go for a little walk in the snow and photograph a small street in my hometown called austurgata or east st. all in all it was freezing but fun.

after i got some films from reykjavik music mess back from the lab last month i uploaded them onto the computer right away and for some reason just forgot about them. was looking over them this morning and decided to post a few frames from the few rolls that i shoot during the festival. black and whites are shot on the ilford hp5 and the color photos are shot on a kodak 400vc. you can also check out a full blown review of the festival over at icecreamman.com , big thanks to the folks at reykjavik grapevine for helping us out with that.

if there is one album that i have been waiting to come out of the oven for a long time, its borko´s sophomore album and now it sounds like the wait is coming to an end. after hearing some of his new material on tour with seabear and sin fang a few years back, i´ve wanted to hear more, much more. this winter borko aka björn kristjánsson has been busy in his petite studio recording new songs and getting some amazing musicians to collaborate in the process. a few weeks ago i dropped by the studio and caught a few frames when sóley did her thing on the accordion. then last week it was time to get some live borko action when the band opened up for apparat organ quartet. and if you find yourself in reykjavik on the 16th and 17th of april make sure you check out the citys newest music festival, reykjavik music mess.

the brilliant and talented sóley from seabear is finishing up here first full length album these days which for all music lovers is the best of news. last year she released the EP "theater island", which was hailed as one of 2010´s best albums by many in the icelandic music press. its possible to listen to it here at the wonderful gogoyoko.com and i highly recommend everyone check it out. last fall the sun was out in full swing and me and sóley did a little promo portrait session behind her house in reykjavík and when i was backing up 2010 the other day i came across the photos from the session and picked out my favorite three.

last week i shot this portrait of icelandic football player jóhann laxdal, who plays for stjarnan FC in the icelandic premier league for a german football magazine called 11 freunde. laxdal and his teammates have been celebrating goals this summer in a rather unique way. one of these celebrations is the salmon fishing one and can be viewed here, this one has around 500.000 views and there are more. the magazine went to print at the end of last week, so i might have the tear sheet posted later this week when i get a copy of it. click on the photo to view larger.

Three portraits i shot of lithuanian theater director Oskaras Koršunovas after i interviewed him a few weeks back for the sunday edition of morgunblaðið daily. the interview was a bit strange to do since his english was not that good and my lithuanian even worse. so we used an interpreter to help out, which was a first for me. his version of romeo & juliet will be shown at the reykjavik arts festival starting up next week. click to see it a larger version of them.

if i'm free on a tuesday nights i often find myself watching and rooting for the bad boys of KF Mjöðm during their games in the winter carlsberg league. playing at night and during winter can be hard for the guys and likewise for us spectators, beanies and warm gloves a must have for both. two games ago i saw the guys win "some"team 3-2 in one hell of a match, the guys showing spirit through out the game. took my g2 with me, loaded with the illford 3200 and snapped a few frames on the sideline and below you can see some of my favorite frames from the cold night in the ghetto.

two weeks into 2010, so lets start with a photo from 2..9 . its not that often that i photograph kids in the studio, but for the past few years i have photographed my friends little kid dagur orri just before christmas and this year was no diffrent. was going through the photos from the shoot the other day and came across this photo. after playing around with it and seeing what worked, it became one of my favorite photos from last year. i find there is something futuristic and sci-fi about it that i like. if you click on it you can see it a bit bigger

this summer i got to watch kimono record their new album and snap a few frames during their session. this fall i watched while seabear mixed their softmore album due out in march, again taking a few photos a long the way. this week i sat down at sundlaugin studio and observed while sindri and maggi recorded drums for new sin fang bous songs, it sounds like sindri has plenty of songs to fill a dozen new albums. after i finished the roll in my camera i noticed that i had shot the whole thing 2 stops under, not what i had planed on doing. when i picked up the film today the whole thing was rather dark for my taste. the photos below are a few i managed to pull back and make something out of. ohh well, stuff like this happens.

yesterday i spent a few hours at sundlaugin studio with sindri and örn from seabear during the final day of mixing their 2nd album set to be released early next year. it was an enjoyable morning with nice light shining through the studios big windows and the music coming out of the speakars fitted the mood . i managed to get of a few frames with the contax g2 which seems to be coming my camera of choice these days. played around with a little cross processing on these photos and if you click on them you can view them larger.

came across a photo project the other day called tokyo camera style and spent one morning going through the whole thing. the project is the brain child of john sypal a photographer who lives and works in tokyo, japan. i have also been going through his blog and i think its the first time i have ever found a blog and gone through the entire archive. but the way he sees japan and the culture was something i found extremely interesting and made me realize how amazing it was spending three weeks there in november last year and how much i want to go back there! hopefully in the near future. below are two photos that i found while going through some images from tokyo and on my website there is a gallery called "tokyo, jp" which is a collection of 20 bw images from the streets of tokyo.

hanging out and waiting for school to start, its almost a year since finishing brooks so next up is trying out the MA program in journalism at the university of iceland. trying to pass some time by going through, cutting down and scanning films both new and old. the hp multi-all in one scanning thing is giving me some troubles with my slides so the im getting out of it for now are film strips but no individual frames but with a little help from google im hoping to figure it out soon.

sports can be a dangerous thing! i should know since i had three big surgeries due to sports before i was 23 years old. the other day i went and see my friends from the soccer team KF mjöðm play their last league match in the carlsberg league. lets just say it was not their night, game got lost and guðmundur einar had to be taken to the hospital and got six stitches in his eye brow. even with the cut guðmundur still managed to stop and pose for a photo before going to the hospital

a few weeks ago i attended the LungA arts & music festival in the seaside town of seyðisfjörður in the east of iceland. just got a little festival review up on icecreamman .com which can be viewed here hands down one of the most beautiful settings to have a festival in, having those huge mountains surrounding you was truly humbling. i also decided to test out a hasselblad camera i borrowed the other day and take a few portraits of musicians. the 1st one is of örn ingi guitarist for seabear and bassist for skakkamanage and the 2nd one is of gylfi blöndal guitarist of kimono. on the way are photos from a seabear & amiina gig in hafnarfjörður, iceland and the innipúkinn festival that was held this past weekend.

after living in california for three years i became a big fan of the diner culture and getting my picture taken and put in the customer photo album of my favorite ventura diner vagabond only made me a bigger fan of this unique american tradition. a few weeks ago my buddy stu introduced me to the stage restaurant in the east village in NYC a diner that mixes american diner culture and eastern european food. it became a daily event for me and i thought it would be a good idea to keep my memories of the place fresh by snapping a few photos of the joint.

i think its fair to say that over the past 12 months i have been to some events that are maybe not the so called "norm" like the chaos that is Comic Con in san diego last summer or the Homeless World Cup last december in melbourn, australia. but i think the strangest event that i have been to this year had to be the Hot Dog Eating Wold Championsships that i just saw take place at the world famous Nathans in Coney Island where Joey Chestnut just defended his title by setting a new WR by eating 68 hot dogs check it out on ESPN. now its back home to sunny old iceland!

last friday i flew out to new york to meet up with my friend stuart rogers from lofi.tv and gogoyoko. stu is also the host of the radio program "all over the shop" a weekly saturday night show on east village radio, i joined him in the sound booth last saturday and snapped some photos of him and the nights guest dj's robbie and milo from the band the big pink, they guys ran through the music spectrum playing all sorts of music and even drawing a small crowd from the streets tuning in. be sure to check out their tour listings and catch them live if you can!

two weekends ago I dropped by for a little late night recording sessions with the boys from Kimono. had my little contax g2 in my bag so snapped of a few frames. only had 400asa film with me so my not so steady hands did their best to capture the feeling in kimonos rather dark rehearsal space. only wish the camera could have captured the massive sound the guys were producing in there, looking forward to hear these recordings soon!.

back in 2006 i photographed oscar nominees runar runarsson and þorir snær sigurjonsson in los angeles a few minutes before they headed of to the red carpet for morgunblaðið in iceland which never ran the photo (below) well it happens. the film "the last farm" is still one of my favorite short films to this day and if you ever get a chance to see it do so. now runars new film "2 birds" is in the offical selection at cannes in france and again i had the chance to photograph producer þórir snær, this time it was at a cafe in copenhagen, denmark and not in LA. i wish them the best of luck in cannes and i hope they take home a prize!

it was cold and snowing in copenhagen last thursday when i went to see FCK play Man City in the UEFA cup, no photo pass this time around but got some nice seats behind the goal so it worked out fine. now the snow is gone and hopefully warmer weather on the way and tomorrow i get my macbook back with a fresh motherboard so i can start doing some editing without having to worry that my comp could shut down at any moment.

last night while talking to my granddad he told me that Andrés Kolbeinsson a good friend of our family had past away last week. met andrés a few times over the past years and what a treat it was to talk photography with him. in my mind he is one of icelands best photographers and some of the candid moments he documented are so amazing to me its hard to describe. last time we meet up was when he opened a photo exhibit last summer at the age of 89, im sure not many peopel would have been able to do that. i reccomend that everyone take a look at the over 4000 negitives he gave to the Photography Museum of Reykjavik, and are displayed on their website.

well same thing but a year later.
last year i listed and posted one photo from all the concerts and musicians that i photographed in 2007. so here is 2008, 28 artists that i covered for icecreamman.com so there might be a few missing from the list that i never published, ill try to go through my archive and see if i cant find those and there might be a good 10-15 shows that i dident photograph for one reason or the other (fx The Police in San Diego and Radiohead in Santa Barbara.) this year was a bit slower then last, two less festivals that i managed to go to , but im pretty sure i saw at least 35-40 bands/artist this year and some more then twice (two bands i followed for two weeks).

well got a working computer now which is great. rather hard being a photographer these days without a computer. but i got one up and running so hopefully ill be able to get more photos out and get some jobs done!

on my short flight from sydney to melbourne i read in the in-flight magazine that this years homeless world cup in soccer would be held in the city during my stay there. didn´t have much time so getting a pass was near impossible but decided to just walk around and try to catch some of the atmosphere around the stadium during the matches. wasent able to see the finals so a 23 hour plane ride to the u.k had to do. more photos and a review on icecreamman.com later this week

well i have been a rather lazy photographer over the past few weeks in australia, shitty weather in brisbane, byron bay and sydney did not make me the most productive of photographers.... i did try to catch a wave here did not go so good, boardshorts and chilly wind from the south-pole dont mix..
did take these two the other day just so i could prove that i actually did go to australia!

its about two years since i had my first mochi ball ice cream and think it was at arthur nights fest at the echo in los angeles. we had them on bessie the ice cream truck and gave away but think i ate more then i managed to give away so im pretty sure i was hooked. got out of the metro on my way to the canon gallery here in tokyo and first thing a saw was this deli, bought a green tea mochi for $1.60 not cheep but as soon as a bit into it, i knew it was worth it....if you are hungry for mochi in the US trader joes has em in six packs.....enjoy!

this past thursday me, zack gemmell and ted nieters hopped into a toyota prius at 5-am and headed out to the desert on our way to tucson, arizona to view some photographic gems at the center for creative photography at the university of arizona. after about 8 hours of driving we made it to kim newton's class room, being our former teacher at brooks kim asked us to show his current students our work, which we gladly did after all he did put up with our BDE pictures for a few year. friday and it was time to go view some prints by masters like w.eugene smith, ansel adams, dorothy lange just to name a few, we must have gone through over 300 prints, box after box of images that just blew our minds and like kim said "you see these pictures in books, magazines and online but seeing them up close is something special." ok lets get to the photos as we were sitting over beers at mr smiths favorite watering-hole music and cheers start coming from the streets and we see its a pep rally for the saturday football game. maybe its just me and not having had cheerleading a part of any of my school years but i dont get it and i think im not going to devote any more time trying to get it so here are a few shots of the UofA cheerleaders with their colgate smiles cheering like there is no tomorrow.

who says you need to go to bejing to see/shoot the best in the world, sometimes they might just live and play almost in your backyard. but man i wish i could be in bejing now to see these guys take the gold! shot these at the santa barbara stop on the AVP in 2006, first and only time shooting beach volley ball. the wheater was somthing similar to the womans finals last night, pooring in the last set.......think i want to play pro beach volley when i grow up

so my friend Ragga broke her own icelandic record in the 50m free this morning congrats to her ..... been going through some of the photos coming out of bejing from the wire services and others and by far the best pictures coming out of china in my opinion can be found at the Newsweek photography blog , great photos and a great insight into the games from the viewpoint of a photographer
